So the first week of Theater Hopper has come to a close. I have to say it’s been a moderate success. Thanks to everyone who has visited the site. Here’s to many more hits in my counter. Er, I mean… laughs and ever-loving friendship! Yea, that’s the ticket!
Today’s strip is basically an indication of how badly my wife doesn’t want to see XXX.
That’s right, I said wife. I really haven’t made any attempt to explain it in the past, but like most strips, the characters are representative of real people in my life. The blond haired fella is supposed to be me, the woman (obviously) is my wife Cami. She asked to be in a strip and she got her wish.
The brown haired dude you saw in the last two strips was the toon alter-ego of my good friend Jared. As far as I know, he never asked to be immortalized in four-color glory, but sometimes life throws us curve balls, y’know?
Whether or not these are the names of the characters, I’ll leave that up to you to decide. I may end up giving them different names down the line – I may just leave them nameless. If you have an opinion in the matter, post it in the forums. Better still, you can now e-mail me at theaterhopper@hotmail.com. I finally got Microsoft Outlook to work, so I can now receive all your comments.
Speaking of which, if you have any suggestions on how to make the site better, I’m more than willing to listen. I’m thinking about adding a section underneath the blog area for movie news. If you can think of any other features I can add, send them in.
One last bit of business and then I’ll let you go about your merry way.

I thought I would take the opportunity to stumble in here this morning to wish a happy-belated-digital birthday to my wife Cami. Her birthday was Sunday and I wanted to declare my love and well wishes in front of the world! Happy Birthday, honey!
I won’t divulge her age because a gentleman never speaks for a lady. I also won’t give out her work e-mail address so everyone can send her birthday wishes because that’s just common sense.
HOWEVER, if you’d like to swing over to the forums, she has an account there and you can wish her well through her personal message box. I don’t know how often she goes into the forums to check those things, but maybe now that I’ve put out the call for response front and center, she’ll drop by and pick up her messages. Maybe if you’re REALLY nice, she might put together her first post for this area!

Also stop and visit Tribbel. Their site design is rock-solid and I was immediately attracted to it. The strip is also very cute and nicely put together. Props to the Tribbel crew for the introductory Flash movie that starts things off right. Makes me wish I came up with it first… or knew Flash.

Hey–maybe it’s just me, but do Tom and Jared look a little TOO happy in that sketch above? I mean, I’ve known both of them for 11 years, but I’ve never quite seem them so… umm… into each other. For the record, both Tom and Jared are married — HAPPILY MARRIED.

Okay, I’ll admit that today’s comic isn’t “wet-your-pants” funny, but I’ll be damned if I was going to pass up an opportunity to win some points by doing a birthday comic for Cami on her actual birthday.
For those of you who sent birthday wishes from Friday’s post, Cami has read them all and thanks you. It just goes to show what an awesome fan base we have.
That’s why I feel so crappy for being late on the comic. The Labor Day holiday had something to do with it, but add the big birthday blowout into the mix and it all adds up to about 4 hours in the house total this weekend. We’ve been catching up with family and friends from out of town and have eaten about a dozen birthday dinners. Good times, good times.
I hope you had a great holiday weekend, too.

As promised, I wanted to come back in today and blog about Cami’s reactions to Sin City.
We hunkered down with a big bowl of popcorn last night and watched it together. It was a lot more violent than I remember. I think when I watched it for the first time back in April, I was more under the spell of it’s visuals. Anyone who reads comics knows its probably the most literal adaptation of any franchise put on film. At that initial viewing, I think I was geeking out so hard, I kind of glossed over how brutal it actually is.
So as this revelation comes to me, I’m thinking to myself “Cami’s hating this. It’s gory. It’s too grotesque. She’s hating this.”
As the credits rolled, I sheepishly asked her “What’d you think?”
“I liked it.”
Imagine my surprise! I asked her what she liked most about the movie.
“The yellow blood!”
Looking back, Cami was pretty engaged in the whole thing. She would ask me questions throughout.
“Wait, wasn’t that girl dead?” “Why is that guy yellow?” “How come Elijah Wood is sitting on the porch when he was killed earlier?” She seemed pretty engaged.
Turns out she liked the segment with Bruce Willis the best. That was my favorite part, too. I think it’s the most poetic and probably the best use of Willis as an aging action star yet.
Of course, for pure vicreal thrills, nothing beats watching Mickey Rourke as Marv lay waste to a bunch of no-name cops. Watching him bust through that windsheild? Man, I get chills just thinking about it!

Clear in my understanding that I am not a member of the targeted demo for Sex and the City: The Movie (on DVD September 23), I decided to do something a little unconventional and interivew my wife Cami and ask her questions about the film.
I concede that I show a little bit of bias in my line of questioning, but at least you’re getting a rebuttal from a fan of the series and not a concentrated blast of cynicism on my part. Frankly, I think Cami handles herself quite well as you can read for yourself below…
Tom Brazelton: What is it that you like about Sex and the City?
Cami Brazelton: The clothes, the “love conquers allness” of it all, the NYC backdrop….It’s an escape from my drab Iowa life in these harsh economic times.
TB: Did you feel the movie was a fair continuation of the television show?
CB: In a lot of ways I enjoyed the series finale better—it provided all the closure that I needed on the TV show in a magical, fairy tale sort of way. This was a nice revisit, but not at all necessary for me as a fan.
TB: What was your favorite part about the movie?
CB: When Charlotte poops her pants, of course!
TB: What was your least favorite part about the movie?
CB: Seeing SJP with no makeup in the scene where she’s in Mexico looking in the mirror. Scary!
TB: Do you feel the movie betrayed the show’s original concept by having Carrie marry Mr. Big and and accepting the “dowry” of a fabulous shoe closet?
CB: No…although the series touted the “women behaving as men” theme, the Carrie character always seemed a bit outside of that—she tended to prefer monogamous long=term relationships–Big, Aiden, Aleksandr Petrovsky. As a fan, you always knew that Carrie wanted commitment…she wanted to walk down the aisle one day and you knew that the only man that she would consider marrying was Big.
TB: Did you feel the promotion of Jennifer Hudson’s character was warranted when it came at the expense of established characters like Charlotte’s husband played by Evan Handler?
CB: Given that Jennifer Hudson’s performance was fresh, fun and a great way to balance the heaviness of the Carrie character, I was OK with the little we saw of Charlotte’s husband. The series probably explored the extent of the character: Jewish, lawer, loving husband and father.
TB: Considering the box office sucess of the film, would you watch a movie sequel? How do you feel about the movie’s conclusion celebrating Samantha’s 50th birthday and the women toasting “the next 50?”
CB: How else would it end?
What would the sequel be about? Carrie and Big having a child? Charlotte raising her daughters? Miranda still being a workaholic? I think a sequel would be boring and utterly predictable. I was fine with the ending…it shows that their friendship will endure for 50 more years.
TB: Were you at all disappointed by the lack of special features? (we were sent the bare-bones widescreen edition) Would you have paid more for the special edition DVD?
CB: Yes and yes.
TB: Final thoughts?
CB: I hop this intervue don’t make me sound dum.

I’m posting this week’s Theater Hopper extraordinarily late on a Tuesday evening. I actually finished the comic late Monday night, but didn’t have a blog ready. I presumed it would have gone live this morning, but I woke up with what could only be described as “crippling nausea.” I don’t know what it was, but it was enough to put me down for the count on Tuesday. I spent most of the day slipping in an out of consciousness.
I’m much better now, thank you – although still a little foggy. A 24-hour bug, I presume. I’m looking forward to getting up on Wednesday morning and kicking ass again.
I don’t get sick very often, but when I do, it’s debilitating to me. I think because I don’t get sick very often, I assume I can’t get sick. That’s kind of a ridiculous way to operate.
Certainly since having kids, I’ve been sick more frequently. Nothing serious. The odd cold here, a sniffle there. Pearl has been wrestling with an ear infection, which is where I’m sure I picked up my bug. Fun times!
Anyway, let’s talk about the comic! Sexy, no? The first time Cami appeared as the Black Widow in this comic from 2010, I proved very popular. So, like the hustler I am, I decided to up the ante a little bit. Yeah, maybe it’s a little salacious. But I’m putting a ribbon on this in August. What do I care, right?
Actually, considering how well the splash page of Cardboard Iron Man turned out last week, I thought it was only fair to give Cami as Black Widow something with a similar impact. I’m really happy with how the artwork turned out! It might be fun to make mini-posters of these, or something. We’ll see!
CONVENTION APPEARANCE
I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know that I will be attending the Midwest Comic Book Association’s Springcon Comic Book Convention this weekend at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, Minnesota.
This will be my last convention appearance promoting Theater Hopper. It is strangely appropriate because Springcon was the first comic book convention I ever went to back in 2003. I split a table with Mitch Clem from Nothing Nice to Say, Zach Miller from Joe and Monkey and Carrington Vanston from the erstwhile Movie Punks. At that first show, I established friendships that still stand to this day. Who would have guessed (for at least three of us) that webcomics would still be a thing we do to kill time.
I have it on good authority that Zach Miller will be in attendance this year and that newly-minted Minnesotan Gordon McAlpin from Multiplex will be there as well. I’m thrilled that I get to see them again on my last lap around the convention circuit (even IF I just saw Gordon a few months ago in Seattle).
I was actually very much surprised to learn that Mitch Clem will be there as well! For those of you who follow him, you know he’s living in Texas these days. But as it worked out, he’ll be in Minneapolis this weekend and splitting a table with Zach!
I don’t much by in to kismet, but you have to admit there’s something kind of cool about that. I probably haven’t seen Mitch in 5 years. It’s oddly fitting that I get to see him one last time at the convention I kicked things off at.
Anyway, that’s what my weekend looks like. If you’re in the neighborhood, please come by and say “Hi.” I’m selling books and drawing sketches. Mostly I’m just going to soak in what a crazy trip the last 10 years has been…
I will say this… if you’re thinking about buying any Theater Hopper merchandise before it’s all said and done, I’d get on it sooner than later. I’ve already sold out of Large, X-Large and 2X-Large sizes of the popular Spoiler I t-shirt. It’s only a matter of time before the rest of it goes as well!
