THE START OF THE SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER SEASON

The comic is a little late today, and for that I apologize. But it’s the Memorial Day holiday, so I’m sure many of you are outside celebrating the occasion. Well, everyone except our international audience, who I am sure are thoroughly annoyed by the inconvenience.

In any case, not much news for the moment except that Cami and I went to see The Longest Yard on Friday and it sucked.

Expect greater commentary and perhaps a comic addressing its suckitude in the near future.

Until then, enjoy some bar-b-que. I know I will!

GASTROINTESTINAL RAGE

GASTROINTESTINAL RAGE

Getting upset about how much a trailer does or doesn’t show seems kind of like an obscure thing. That is, unless you hang out on the internet – where this kind of vitrol is commonplace.

With much fanfare, the teaser trailer for The Incredible Hulk premiered on all Viacom-owned cable networks on Wednesday – MTV, VH1, Comedy Central, the works. Anticipation for this thing was so huge, they were running commercials for the teaser. “Be sure you don’t miss the teaser trailer for The Incredible Hulk!”

Marketing has gotten so meta, it won’t be long until they start running commercials for the idea to film a movie. “Stephen Spielberg was thinking about a sequel to E.T. while eating a cantaloupe this morning! Stay tuned for the next two years to see if he decides to make it!”

All I know is that the people who are buying tickets for Doomsday to see this trailer are going to feel like chumps.

Personally, I wasn’t offended by how much the trailer showed. The lead-up to the big fight between the Hulk and the Abomination looks bad-ass. But I run in circles where people thought they showed too much. Maybe it would have been nice to have been teased a little bit with how this version of the Hulk was going to look. But you know what? Hardly anything is a secret anymore, so why not come out of the gate swinging? Literally!

Actually, from what I’ve heard, the fight sequence is supposed to be almost a half hour long. Two giant monsters beating the crap out of each other in and around New York City? They haven’t even shown us the tip of the iceberg yet.

That said, this trailer didn’t get me as pumped as I was when I saw the first Iron Man teaser. Now, admittedly, I’m a huge Iron Man fan, so I was going to be pumped regardless. But at the same time, it was affirming to see the Iron Man team wasn’t screwing things up. As for The Incredible Hulk? The jury is still out.

Reportedly, star Ed Norton Jr. is fighting with the producers about how the film should end. Norton wants it to be darker. Marvel wants it to be family fare. This is par for the course when working with Norton. Reportedly, he’s been like this ever since American History X. That’s a good and a bad thing. He’s invested in the character – even wrote a draft of the screenplay. No doubt he’ll bring something great to his performance. But sometimes you gotta know when to step out of the way.

Personally, I’m probably just as interested in the performances between Norton and Tim Roth as the villain as I am about the CG smack down. But it’s sort of bittersweet because these two have to be swept off the stage at some point to let their CG counterparts take over.

Back to the trailer, I’m actually kind of surprised that they’re releasing it just a few months before Iron Man hits theaters. You’d think Marvel would want to keep our attention on that since the character is less well known than the Hulk and this is his first big screen outing.

Maybe this trailer is just to whet the pallet until after Iron Man comes out, then will get hit with the full-fledged assault. We’ll see.

Sorry for the delay posting today’s comic, but I have a good reason. I went to see Henry Rollins do a spoken word show last night. He was on stage for three hours and then I hung around afterwords to see if I could meet him. If you want more details (including photos), you can read the rest of the story over at my LiveJournal page.

Until then, take it easy and have a great weekend!

BROTHERS OFFICIAL TRAILER AND TEASER POSTER

July 13th, 2009 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Hot from my inbox, here is the official trailer and teaser poster for the upcoming military drama Brothers starring Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman. Lionsgate must think they have an Academy Award contender on it’s hands. Brothers hits theaters on December 4.

[qt:/trailers/brothers/brothers-iPhone.m4v /trailers/brothers/brothers-poster.jpg 480 214]

I think the film looks good. It seems to deliver on the promise of Maguire and Gyllenhaal’s emerging gravitas. Of course, anything not Star Wars that manages to attract Natalie Portman’s attention also gets a pass. I view her as an intelligent actress who strategically picks her roles. So her involvement in this one speaks volumes.

It’s weird for me to see Maguire in the trailer. Not only because he went all “method” and withered away to almost nothing. But also because I’ve come to identify him so strongly with Spider-Man, it’s jarring to see him in anything else.

How weird must it have been to be cast in a movie with Gyllenhaal – the dude poised to step into his shoes if his negotiations on Spider-Man 3 feel through? Any awkward conversations around the craft services table for those two? Who knows – maybe it benefited the animosity between the two characters as it builds into the third act.

Anyway, here’s the poster:

Synopsis:
BROTHERS tells the powerful story of two siblings, thirty-something Captain Sam Cahill (Tobey Maguire) and younger brother Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal), who are polar opposites. A Marine about to embark on his fourth tour of duty, Sam is a steadfast family man married to his high school sweetheart, the aptly named Grace (Natalie Portman), with whom he has two young daughters. Tommy, his charismatic younger brother, is a drifter just out of jail who’s always gotten by on wit and charm. When his Black Hawk helicopter is shot down in the mountains Sam is presumed dead and the Cahill family suddenly faces a shocking void. Tommy tries to fill in for his brother by assuming newfound responsibility for himself, Grace, and the children. In the grief and strangeness of their new lives, Grace and Tommy are naturally drawn together. Their longstanding frostiness dissolves, but both are frightened and ashamed of the mutual attraction that has replaced it.

But Sam is not dead; he and a fellow soldier have been captured by Taliban fighters. In Afghanistan’s harsh, remote Pamir Mountains, Sam is subjected to traumas that threaten to rob him of his very humanity. At the same time that Sam’s sense of self is being destroyed overseas, Tommy’s self-image is strengthening at home.

When Sam unexpectedly returns to the States, a nervous mood settles over the family. Sam, uncharacteristically withdrawn and volatile, grows suspicious of his brother and his wife. Their familiar roles now nearly reversed, Sam and Tommy end up facing the ultimate physical and mental challenge when they confront each other. In the shifting family dynamics, who will dominate? Directed by six-time Oscar® nominee Jim Sheridan (IN AMERICA, IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER), BROTHERS tells the compelling tale of how two brothers come to terms with issues of love, loyalty, and manhood—and with the woman caught between them.

CAPTAIN AMERICA TEASER POSTER

Captain America, poster, teaser, Chris Evans

Marvel officially unveiled the teaser poster for Captain America this morning. What’s your take?

Personally, I don’t think they needed to add the word “AVENGE” over the top of it. The image of Captain America is already so iconic, why add another layer to it?

I also kind of think they’re over doing it with the grime and splatter. It’s almost like they’re doing anything they can to tone down the otherwise cartoonishly bright color elements of Cap’s costume. Maybe that’s necessary. But, y’know… strike a balance.

Marvel has already announce trailers for Captain America AND Thor will air during the Super Bowl. Until then, we have this to pick apart. What are your thoughts? Leave your comments below!

CAPTAIN AMERICA SUPER BOWL AD

February 8th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

I know that talking about ads that aired on the Super Bowl three days after the fact is like asking you to study ancient Sanskrit in internet terms, but I’m getting caught up, okay? I’m not going to dig into ever trailer that aired during Sunday’s game. Just the spots that got my attention. And I’d say – out of all of them – the trailer for Captain America is the one to beat.

The spot is cut together pretty fast. It’s almost “you blink and you miss it” fast. But I think it hits all the right notes in terms of flashing iconic images of Cap’s shield and The Red Skull unmasking himself. These image do what a good teaser clip should – they make us want to see more of the movie.

I’m still a little freaked out by Chris Evans’s gigantic head on a tiny body, but the effect is otherwise seamless. I’m also a little disturbed that the Super Solider serum apparently gives you boobs. But that’s neither here nor there.

What was your impression of the Captain America trailer? Leave your comments below!

TRAILER – THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

July 19th, 2011 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

A whole lot of people sent me the link to the new teaser trailer for The Dark Knight Rises yesterday. So I’m a little behind the curve in terms of posting it here. But if you haven’t seen it yet, here you go.

I’m kind of turned off by “flashback” teaser trailers that splice in footage from earlier movies. I’ve seen those movies. You don’t need to remind me. Maybe it’s just me, but I’d rather look at a black screen with characters speaking dialogue from the NEW movie than look at footage from the old movie.

Then again, it is a teaser and certainly there will be more to come in the future.

I dunno. I guess I’m having a hard time getting excited about this clip. Aside from the fact that Christopher Nolan is still very much interested in architecture since Inception, this trailer tells me little else.

What was your reaction to it?

THE PROMISE OF DALTON – SKYFALL TEASER TRAILER

May 21st, 2012 | by Tom
Posted In: Bonus Materials

Check it out, homies. The new teaser trailer for the next James Bond outing, Skyfall.

The James Bond franchise to me is like AC/DC, ZZ Top or Helmet. Bands that have been milking the same riffs for decades, but who play those riffs better than anyone else.

Watching the cold, calculating and just-below-the-surface seething emotion of Daniel Craig makes me think of the harder, more cynical Bond that Timothy Dalton signed on to play. Craig’s turn at the wheel finally delivers a lethal authenticity to Bond that Dalton just never got across for me.

Very much looking forward to Skyfall. What’s your take?
