well… I REALLY want to see scott pilgrim and the expendable… But Tales from Earthsea is also coming out at the same time… You know, a film that’s artistic and what not…
Decisions, decisions… and so little money to spare…
I have seen Tales From Earthsea. Artistic was about the best that could be said for it from what I recall (it has been a LONG time since I have seen it.) The “theme song” was pretty good.
I have never read any of the books so I don’t know how it compares to them but I get the feeling that they weren’t close (which is probably typical.)
Oddly enough, August has become my most anticipated month this summer (contrary to most years). Scott Pilgrim, Expendables, The Other Guys (which is supposed to be quite funny, if the early buzz has any merit), Piranha 3D, Centurion, Middle Men, Tales from Earthsea, and Takers (yes, Takers)? Seems like a good crop to me, much better than the one-to-two winners we’ve had in the past few months (2010 hasn’t been the strongest year).
And Wahlberg can do comedy, just not in the wacky style that Ferrel does. Look at Boogie Nights, for instance (alright, that’s stretching it, but run with me here).
I’m looking forward to seeing what Wahlberg does in a comedy. I haven’t seen him in a comedy before and I don’t have the same view of him as you. Plus, I buy him as a cop more than I buy Ferrell as one, and there needs to be a straight man for what looks like some over the top Ferrell insanity in this one.
I think Walhberg can pull this off, he seems to be playing an angry, slightly crazy guy. I really enjoyed when he was on SNL threatening Andy Samberg after his great impression.
Hey there Amy Poehler you’re pregnant what’s up with that? Say hi to your mother for me.
I remember he gave an interview the week after that sketch aired and was genuinely upset about that impersonation at the time – not quite getting that his humorlessness was exactly what Andy Sandberg was making fun of. He only went on SNL later to negate the bad press he was getting.
Wahlberg seems to me like the kind of guy that’s trying to cling to street cred a little too much. Dude. You made it. You’re an A-lister. Loosen up a little.
I don’t think you went too far. I think most Scott Pilgrim fans are nerds (which is why I’m so psyched for it; I am a huge nerd). I’m still trying to find a nerd guy who can keep up with me in terms of ballsiness.
I’ve actually SEEN Scott Pilgrim (I got into a prescreening) and it was AWESOME! I am a huge nerd and have read the books but I went to see it with a bunch of people who had no idea about the books and we all agreed it was amazing. Don’t doubt just go see it.
You’ll definitely like the movie then. They changed some stuff but otherwise the humor is there and some of the scenes look like reconstructed panels from the books. It’s all good!
Saw “The Expendables” at a press screening several weeks ago – and boy, is it ever fun.
But what I really wanted to share: You do know that special “Call to Arms” (fake) trailer for “The Expendables” don’t you? If not, go ahead and look for it on YouTube. It’s putting “Eat, Pray, Love” into proper context;-)
I actually had the pleasure of seeing The Other Guys in an advanced screener and it was hilarious stuff. Mark Wahlberg had some funny scenes and his insults delivered in the dry manner that he usually acts is hilarious stuff. I think you can safely look forward to that movie for quite a few laughs.
Will Ferrell hasn’t made me laugh since Zoolander. I’m mildly curious about Scott Pilgrim ( never read the comic ), purely to see what Edgar Wright does with it.
I saw the Other Guys and the entire time I watched it all I could think was the less Will Ferrell the better. He had a tendency to ruin any scene he was in. Mark Wahlberg was the saving grace for the movie.
I also saw Salt with it (gotta love seeing 2 movies at a drive in for $6) and that movie was really predicatable and kind of boring. Neither of them are movies I’d see movies more than once.

Holy crap! i forgot about centurion! Now i have even less money to spare… DARN YOU COLLEGE!

Scott Pilgrim the movie looks worse than the comic, which was cringe-inducing bad.
Ok I gotta know, why is Jared’s arm up in all 3 panels?
I dunno. He was being theatrical? Made sense at the time.
I mean, how long do you think it would take for that exchange to take place? 5 to 10 seconds tops.

Wahlberg can do a little comedy. His turn in Boogie Nights was pretty good. Feel, feel, feel feel the heat!
I think the reason Wahlberg’s performance in Boogie Nights worked was because Dirk Diggler was as unaware of himself as Wahlberg is.

Oh, I fully intend to see it. In fact, I recently bought all of the books, read them and loved them. So I’m anticipating it.
I’m just having some fun with it until I do.

I’ve seen the fake “Call to Arms” trailer and loved it! Linked it up on my Facebook page a while ago!
Man, if only Lionsgate had the stones to run with it in the real world.
