GIVE ME SOME TIME TO THINK OF SOMETHING WITTY

March 4th, 2005 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

I’m trying to figure out the best way to frame my commentary about today’s comic. I’m aware that it’s slightly obtuse in it’s delivery.

So in the meantime, while I’m trying to figure that out – Why don’t you vote for Theater Hopper at buzzComix. The top 10 list recently reset and I hate to see the strip out of contention.

As a reward, you’ll be treated to one of the weirdest/cutest incentive sketches I’ve ever drawn! Oh, and I have a new banner up over at buzz. If the comic gets into the top 10, you’ll get to see it.

Thanks, y’all!

BETTER?

I took some advice on how to adjust the CSS that runs the site from the comments section of yesterday’s blog. I’m telling you, I’m in love with this new feature! The instant feedback is great and so helpful!

I believe these suggestions have cleared up the problems people were having with the horizontal scroll bar that shouldn’t be there. Some people were sending messages saying that about an inch of the left side of the site was being cut off completely.

Are things better now? Let me know in the comments!

DESIGN FEEDBACK

February 12th, 2007 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Since Dave was good enough to introduce the fancy blog commenting system, I thought I would take this opportunity to utlize it for a little feedback.

You guys might remember a while back when I was trying to develop some new shirt designs for the store. As per usual, the design phase takes me for friggin’ ever because I’ll design, redesign, doubt myself and then hang it up. The reason for this is because you kind of have to have momentum in order to produce these things and it’s a bit of a tightrope walk to keep the right amount of inventory in stock. I feel like I kind of have a good thing going on with the handful of designs I’m currently offering. But at the same time, I’m kind of bored with it and it’s time to branch out.

This time I think I’ve got something on my hands. Something that you will like. It’s a refinement of the "Opening Weekend Junkie"  concept I was floating around before. I have a few variations I would like you to inspect and, when you’re finished, leave your thoughts on the comments page! Easy!

Okay, onto the designs.

1. The first design is pretty literal. Not too far from the first few drafts with the exception of a TORN ticket instead of a ticket coming out of a dispenser;

2. For the second draft, I thought to myself, "If I were really a junkie, my fonts wouldn’t be so need and orderly." So I tried making things a little more askew;

3. Pushing the askew concept a little more. Throwing the fonts around at different sizes and angles;

4. At this point I started to really appreciate the simplicity of the torn ticket and thought about paring back the message a little bit. Showing a torn ticket and simply stating "junkie." pretty much gets across the same idea without throwing in the "Opening Weekend" prefix. Also, what if you’re schedule is too busy to afford you the luxury of seeing movies on their opening weekend? At least this way, you can say you’re a movie junkie in the general sense.

5. Simpifying further, I thought to myself "Maybe it doesn’t need any text at all! Yes… the design is THAT strong." Ah, hubris.

Those are pretty much the designs to choose from. For those of you who want to see the ticket stub in more detail, you can click here.

So, what do you think. Which of these designs would you wear if any?

Be gentle. Remember what I told you about the second-guessing?

VS. EVERYONE

It’s been kind of interesting to read the reaction to today’s strip. People have been leaving comments here and over at my Twitter account about what mythical or pop culture combatants they’d like to see in the free-for-all.

Vikings, pirates, astronauts, zombies, cavemen, vampires, Chuck Norris, The Stay Puft Marshmallow Man… I’ve heard ’em all!

The idea was floated around that I draw it and sell a print. I think it sounds like a good idea, but I keep thinking I’ve seen something like that before. In fact, after rummaging through the ol’ memory banks, I remember Young American Comics produced an anthology a few years ago called The Big Ol’ Book of BIZMAR – 75 stories combining Bunnies, Insects, Zombies, Monkeys, Aliens and Robots. I remember because a few of my friends contributed to it.

Certainly no one owns the rights to these kind of mash-ups. But I don’t want to pour a lot of effort into something that’s already been done.

What do you think? Would you like to see an original art piece from me featuring all of your favorite pop culture heroes and villains duking it out?

Leave your comments and suggestions for additional fighters below!

UNLOCK’D

September 18th, 2009 | by Tom

I was reading a tweet from Joel Watson – creator of HijiNKS Ensue – and he was talking about how he enjoyed watching new readers plow through the archives, commenting in reverse as they go.

It got me thinking about how that’s not something you can do on Theater Hopper because, in a fit of paranoia, I instructed WordPress to shut off the commenting feature after 14 days. I guess I don’t remember what I was afraid of. Probably spammers. But truth be told, we haven’t had a problem with spammers in months (knock on wood). So I decided it was time to let go of the leash.

Starting today, anyone can comment on any comic in the archive. That might not appealing to those of you who have been with the site for a while. But who knows?

I guess I’d rather leave the option open for conversation rather than put a cap on it before it can start.

Just thought I would let you know!

PROMOTING COMMUNITY

March 10th, 2010 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

I was sitting around and thinking a little bit and want to get your feedback. I’m curious as to your thoughts about the Theater Hopper “community” and if I’m doing enough to promote it or make it more visible.

Long-time readers remember the THorum community. I’ve tried to relaunch it a couple of times, but I’ve decided to give up the ghost. You can’t put lightning in a bottle twice.

That’s not to say that I’ve given up on community-building altogether. We have a stable of regular posters who leave their thoughts and opinions in the comments section of the blog. I just wonder if I’m doing enough to promote that? Maybe someone who doesn’t read the blog has an opinion about the comic, but no outlet to express it. Maybe they’re not seeing the “COMMENT” link at the bottom of each blog post.

I don’t know. I just wanted to do a little brainstorming, kick around a few ideas and see what you guys thought.

What can I do to attract more people to the comments section and are there additional avenues toward community-building that I haven’t explored?

Thanks.

REPLY TO COMMENTS FEATURE ADDED!

March 22nd, 2010 | by Tom
Posted In: Blog

Just wanted to let you guys know that I added a new feature to the site that allows you to reply directly to a specific comment in the comments thread. Before, new comments would show up at the bottom of the page. But now if you want to address someone directly, your comment will appear immediately below theirs! Pretty cool, huh?

The plugin also affords you the opportunity to be notified when someone responds to one of YOUR comments. How cool is that?

Incidentally, this is the plugin I’m using. I might need a little help customizing it for the site. For example, the “Notify me of follow-up comments via e-mail” check box appears in the lower left corner of the comment input field. I’d like to get it a little closer to the “Submit Comment” button.

If any of you have WordPress or plugin experience, let me know. I could use a little help.

Enjoy the new feature!
