SPRING BROKE

April 28th, 2003 | by Tom

Cami and I narrowly avoided seeing The Real Cancun this weekend. We got in the car, drove to the theater to check for show times, grabbed dinner and then thought better of ourselves before deciding we should just go home. What can I say? We were bored. It was a moment of weakness.

I feared that any success that would befall The Real Cancun would bring nothing but bad tidings for the rest of us for all eternity. Billed as the first “reality” movie (suddenly documentaries don’t count?) The Real Cancun was filmed in 2 weeks in March of this year, edited in another 2 weeks from 80 hours of footage of a bunch of bronzed morons killing brain cells over their spring break.

We’ve already seen what reality programming to TV having wiped most produced dramas and comedies clean off the slates of most prime time rosters. Should The Real Cancun do any real business, a wave of this kind of material would surely follow. I didn’t want to be a part of that.

I mean, when you get down to it, what is The Real Cancun but a two hour long episode of The Real World where you finally get to see some boobs? Do you want to admit you carved out a block of time for that?

BUT WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SMELL-O-VISION?

BUT WHATEVER HAPPENED TO SMELL-O-VISION?

Despite what the comic may suggest, I’m actually a big fan of the Spy Kids franchise. The latest offering (in theaters this Friday!) has me very excited. In case you didn’t know – it’s in 3-D.

I wish more films had gimmick’s like this. Sometimes I lament that I wasn’t born in the B-Movie era of the early 50’s. I would have loved to have been there in those specially themed movie houses, decorated like Aztec temples or and Amazon jungle to watch a Saturday afternoon serial with horrid production values. The movie theater experience these days is like lambs to the slaughter.

Look at me. Talkin’ about the “old days” like I was there, or something.

“Why, in my day, you could buy a loaf of bread, a pint of milk, a penny whistle and still have enough left over to see an Errol Flynn movie before catching the trolly back home!”

Feh!

I’ll be “out of the office” the rest of this week. I’m leaving for Las Vegas on Thursday and won’t be back until next Monday. I plan on having a kick ass time with my parents and Cami. We’re staying at Treasure Island, which has a pirate theme. So even if I lose all my money gambling, I still have pirates!

For those of worried about getting your regular TH fix this Friday and next Monday need not worry. I put out the call for guest strips and got some great stuff in return.

In fact, you guys – the fans – were SO enthusiastic, I received several guest strips from which to choose! How do I plan on solving the problem? By posting all throughout my vacation!

So that means, in addition to getting a comic on Friday and Monday, you can expect comics on Saturday and Sunday, too! Aren’t I nice?!

WHO are the artist penning these modern marvels of publishing history? You’ll just have to check in to find out! I’ll also be posting my blogs ahead of time in conjunction with the guest strips, so you have that to look forward to as well.

I may have a few other issues to tackle before the day is out, but I think this is good for now. Maybe in the meantime, you can show me some vote love over at TWC for taking such good care of you!

INCREDIBLE

Can I just say something really quick about Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles?

I was watching it last night – Actually listening to it would be more apt. I put on the commentary track with director Brad Bird and Producer so-and-so while I was drawing today’s comic.

Anyway, I was listening to the commentary, and the darn thing is about as funny as the actual movie. What a great commentary track. I live for stuff like this. Most commentary tracks are very flat and boring. They talk about how hot is was that day or how difficult scene "x," "y" or "z" was to shoot. The Pixar guys really go into detail telling you stuff about the production that you actually want to know.

I could watch The Incredible’s over and over. It speaks directly to my comic book sensibility and every time I watch it, I catch some kind of new detail. These was a film made with great love and care. The expressiveness of the animation totally sells. If I ever am at a lose for an expression to give the Theater Hopper characters, I will toss in The Incredibles and pick up a new one every time.

Watching their films makes me want to pack up my bags and move to Emeryville, California so I can camp out at their studios. I’d love to get a job there. But I just remembered I’m not an animator.
