I will be taking my wife to see Oceans this weekend as well. I suppose I’ll be taking our son too, although he’s still in the womb. I’m pretty excited about it though, as the preview footage I’ve seen looks great, and it’s not like Earth where it’s just regurgitated footage (which is good, because I own Planet Earth and pre-ordered Life).
So, FYI… 100% new footage. The segment they have up on youtube titled “weathering the storm” with the ship is what sold me! A big ship slamming through huge waves like that… I’M THERE! Plus, I know how baby turtles melt my wife’s heart. 🙂
It’s 100% new footage? They need to advertise that! I just assumed it was all recycled since they actually had the trailer for it in front of Earth last year!
Nice job. I like the kind of off the wall punchlines. I do have a question though. Jared mentions “Patti” and either she’s not been mentioned before or it’s been so long that I’ve just forgotten her, little help? ;>.>
Patti has appeared probably a handful of times in the last 8 years. Jared’s real-life wife is named Patti. But I just kind of use her as a reference point in the comic because I don’t know how comfortable she would be as a character in the strip.
I’ve got no desire to see The Backup Plan, but may go out and see The Losers. I kept meaning to see Kick-Ass last week, but the lukewarm reviews I heard from friends has made me hesitant. At this point, I’ll probably just catch it on DVD or, if I feel adventurous, wait for it to come out at the $3 theater down the road.
My thoughts about Oceans:
AMAZING footage, horrible narration. My wife said it’s the first movie she would love to see silent (without dialogue really, the music was great). I agree!
Pierce Brosnan sounds like he got loaded up with relaxants before recording, because he couldn’t sound any softer and gentler. That on top of how the Ocean is constantly described basically as a living goddess (complete with emotions) is enough to drive you crazy. Also, there are NO educational facts AT ALL. Planet Earth fills you with awe and amazement not just from the footage, but the incredible information you learn. Oceans, when it says anything at all, makes very vague statements. You hear that tuna are extremely fast long distance travelers, but you don’t know why… How fast do they go? How far? You just see a school whoosh by the camera then the topic moves on to something entirely different. “This is a blue whale, the largest creature in the world. It eats these little crill” *NOM NOM whale takes a big gulp and fills it’s mouth* Then it moves on again. So I’m thinking ‘wait, I want to see more than 10 seconds of that whale. And how much does it eat? Number, weight… give me something, JUST ANYTHING!”
Oh, and not to mention, the baby turtles segment (also probably only a minute long) is a complete slaughter. “When baby turtles hatch at night, they’re much more safe than in broad daylight.” You see it’s obviously not night time… and the swarm of birds gather.
Not to get carried away and write my own review here in the comments section (which I basically already have {forgive me Tom}), but I was pretty pumped to see this movie because of the totally new footage. They really found some amazing ways to film these animals. Again… the footage is incredible! There’s a section with dolphins where the camera man must be on some high speed underwater scooter or something, because you’re jetting along just under the surface of the water right with the dolphins. So cool. But despite all this, my wife and I were very disappointed. We couldn’t get past how stupid and irritating Brosnan is. It’s probably akin to Oprah narrating BBC’s new life, except in Oceans the script is additionally horrid (and incredibly bland).
There’s also parts that just make you want to laugh. Right after a line of dialogue where he says about the ocean “and she has anger too” it shows these waves splashing over a seawall in some nice East coast neighborhood as if the ocean is pissed off and actually, purposefully attempting to destroy those people that are sitting in their homes. I had to start giving the animals and the ocean itself voices to make things interesting. “Damn those humans! Once I blast my way over this wall, I will DESTROY THEM ALL!!”
Well, if your looking for a 84 minute nap, you’ll find it in OCEANS. Brosnan’s narration is as flat and his script is lifeless and dull (the exact opposite of last year’s EARTH which was at least entertaining). Henry might like it or he may be permanently anti-movie afterwards (and may even club a few baby seals for good measure). SOME good visuals, but otherwise I agree with Metromix: **1/2 out of 5.
I like that the computer screen is from 1988.
My wife wants to see The Losers, so I’m safe.
What if they show “The Back-Up Plan” on the plane?
Tom: “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!”
Ahah!
Tom looks so confident, like this is the definitive plan on what to do in a situation like this… that’s the funniest part of this comic XD
Is that an all-expense paid trip to Hollywood…? To stop them from making movies like this?

Let us know how Oceans is. I kind of want to see it.

My 2 cents… extended edition.
