Today’s guest comic comes to us from Paul Southworth, formerly of Ugly Hill and currently from You Are Dead over at Crispy Gamer.
Paul was a total rock star putting together this comic. He was quick to respond when I asked if he could help me out and was really excited about it along the way.
Before submitting it to me, he asked if I had anything planned for 9 and I had to admit I did not. Within a couple of hours, he sent the finished comic and I was blown away! I seriously need to pick his brain about how to do backgrounds. He only throws in a couple of details, but does a much better job of giving the characters a believable space to operate in than I do.
Oh, and the joke is funny, too! ;D
Be sure to check out You Are Dead over at Crispy Gamer and don’t forget to look up Ugly Hill while you’re at it. Paul isn’t updating Ugly Hill anymore, but the archives are still online and well worth your time.
If you have a Twitter account, I suggest following him there as well. I find his updates consistently hilarious and a fun addition to my Twitter feed.
Thanks again, Paul, for the excellent guest strip!
As for 9, I keep forgetting it’s in theaters today. I don’t know if it’s because it’s coming out on a Wednesday or because I haven’t seen ads for it or what. But it feels like it’s off my radar.
I want to see 9, but I don’t feel as excited for it as some people seem to. It looks interesting, but it doesn’t look like a must-see to me.
The movie is being billed first as “Produced by” Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov which doesn’t reflect the awesome team-up potential those names together might inspire. Basically all it says is that they liked the source material and put up some money to see the movie made. Shane Acker is the director and is essentially an unknown quantity with a handful of credits to his name.
I would say that I was impressed by the voice talent in this movie – Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau, John C. Reilly, Crispin Glover, Jennifer Connelly and Elijah Wood all star – but, truthfully, voice over work is such an easy paycheck for these actors, it’s hard to get excited about the movie on name recognition alone.
Basically I’m expecting to see a movie unlike anything visually put to screen before. But in terms of story and plot… well, the jury is still out.
What are your thoughts about 9? Are you going to try to see it today, or is everyone staying indoors to play Rock Band: The Beatles?
Happy 9.9.09, everyone! Remember: this will never happen again! Well, until 10.10.10 – which is basically the same thing.
Cheers!
I hope they make action figure out of those little cloth guys!
Pfft, action figures? I'm holding out for Halloween costumes.
Two months later...
Hey Tom! I see you got your costume. Is that real burlap?
OH GOD ITCHY.
Hey, just wanted to point out the previous comic arrow links to the wrong page. 😛
That’s really weird about the previous button not working. This is all supposed to be automated by WordPress, so I don’t know why it would do something random like that.
I’ll look into it.
I think it’s weird, I haven’t seen much promotional stuff for 9. I saw a poster or 2 in the movie theaters and one preview in a movie but that’s it. Frankly, I’m more interested in the musical movie nine that comes out in November.
Unlike Gamer, I must be watching the right movies & tv programming because I’ve been seeing a decent amount of previews for quite awhile. I’ve been looking forward to seeing it but, unfortunately, I will be too busy this weekend to see it.
I’m very eager and more than a little nervous about 9. I’ve been looking forward to it for months, but early buzz on it has been lukewarm. I’ll be seeing it in a couple hours, so I’ll know for myself soon enough.
I’ve been seeing tons of commercials for it the past couple weeks, and I’ve seen the trailer in the theater quite a few times. It inspired me to track down the original short film on YouTube. I highly recommend it, it’s visually stunning.
I’m excited for 9. I really liked the short film and am interested to see how it’ll be as a feature length. I too have been seeing ads for it a lot. I don’t remember where but I also remember seeing the trailer for it in the beginning of the year.
Also, the 09/09/09 thing TECHNICALLY speaking will happen again. It’s just that none of us will be alive for it.
I caught an advance screening of “9” and I must say it’s a fantastic ride. However, I must say it really earns its PG-13 rating. This is not a movie to take any children to thanks to some surprisingly disarming visuals. Additionally, the movie clocks in around 80 minutes but the traditionally short run time for a feature film feels just right.
I’m going to see 9 tonight and am pretty excited to see it. Mostly because it seems slightly more intense than pixar movies meaning less young children in the theater talking aloud and laughing at all the seemingly funny parts. But other than that I have no idea what to expect seeing that the trailer tells us almost nothing about the plot. I’m really hoping for an awesome movie. We’ll see!
i have also seen alot of previews but i live in canada so i guess its kinda different marketing maybe. i never even thought of action figures for this. those will be sweet!!!
im surprised Tom that this hasnt really been on your radar, im seeing it in two hours and im pumped. and even tho it was a downer the final destination really got me into this whole digital 3-D thing sadly tho i dont think 9 is. anyways great guest strips but cant wait till your back!
I haven’t seen any promotional material for “9” other than the poster that was up at the movie theater when I went to see “Inglorious Basterds”. I barely even looked at it, but maybe I’ll look into it more now.
As for Beatles: Rock Band, I picked up my reserve copy today from Gamestop and have been playing it nonostop! It is an amazing game!
I saw “9” tonight. It was a pretty good movie. Definitely not for little kids. The original short film is better overall. It felt more satisfying at the end than the theatrical version. Don’t get me wrong, this is still a very good film to watch. I’m just wondering what they left out. Guess I’ll have to wait until the DVD comes out.
It’s funny, I’m seeing a lot of comments along the lines of “not for little kids”, and I’ve heard the same from several people I know who have seen the movie. And I’m left wondering:
What about the promotional campaign for this movie caused people to think that “9” was a movie to bring little kids to?
Post-apocalyptic setting, dark tone and soundtrack, violent imagery and backstory…I’m sorry, but I never once thought this was a movie for kids, and I really don’t think there was anything indicating that this was so. I mean, it has a PG-13 rating.
As far as I can tell, the only reason people may have thought that “9” was meant for younger audiences is because it’s an animated movie, and I think that’s doing a great disservice to both this film and the medium as a whole. Animation has grown a lot in the past decade; I think it’s time everyone’s expectations did the same thing.
I saw “9” on opening night and while the visuals were astounding, the story fell flat. I felt there was no true motivation for the antagonist and the one supporting protagonist I really cared to see didn’t appear much. If you want to see it for the visuals, go for it – it’s a wonderful ride and as some have said, it was nice to have some darkness thrown in there, but if you’re looking for a compelling story, it’s not worth your money.
